The BMW M flat-bottom steering wheel

BMW introduced the flat-bottom M steering wheel with the G82 M4 LCI and then rolled it out to the G80/G81 M3, G87 M2 and the LCI 2, 3 and 4 Series. Unlike the earlier M Performance and M4 CSL Alcantara wheels, the flat-bottom wheel comes in both leather and Alcantara and supports steering wheel heating and Driving Assistant Professional (DAP), so you don’t have to give up either feature for the new look.

Which flat-bottom wheel do I need?

Pick the material, then match the heating and Driving Assistant Professional options your car has:

Note on heating: the flat-bottom wheel has no physical heating button. Heating is switched on and off by voice command or in the iDrive display. On pre-LCI cars this needs to be coded.

Which BMWs does it fit?

The flat-bottom wheel can be installed or retrofitted in these models:

Customers have also retrofitted it to the XM G09, X3 G01, X3 M F97, X4 G02, X4 M F98 and X5 G05. In those cars a new airbag and horn plate were needed as well, and in some cases coding.

Which parts do I need for a retrofit?

A retrofit is not plug and play like an M Performance wheel. There are two ways to do it.

Option 1: Essentials (do it yourself, reuse your old parts)

Buy only the parts that are new on the flat-bottom wheel and move the rest over from your current wheel.

Parts you keep from your current wheel:

Parts you need to buy:

  1. The flat-bottom steering wheel itself
  2. Steering wheel trim:
  3. Top cover (between the M1 and M2 buttons, for M and non-M models)
  4. Vibration motor (Vibrationsaktor) and its cover
  5. Screw set
  6. Wiring harness: for M cars or for non-M cars (see the tables below)

Option 2: Full conversion (all new parts, assembled by you or by us)

Everything new, so you receive a complete wheel: install it, refit your airbag, done. On top of the essentials above you also need a new horn plate, steering wheel buttons (they differ by vehicle), M1/M2 buttons and a new set of screws.

Which wiring harness? M models (e.g. G87 M2)

FAQ

Can I fit a flat-bottom steering wheel to my pre-LCI BMW?

Yes, on the models listed above. You need the new trim, top cover, vibration motor and cover, screw set and the right wiring harness; the airbag, buttons and horn plate can usually be moved over. Heating has to be coded on pre-LCI cars.

Leather or Alcantara?

Both are available with or without heating and Driving Assistant Professional, so choose by look and feel. See the part number table.

Are these genuine BMW parts?

Yes. Every wheel and part in this guide is a genuine BMW part, sourced directly through our Munich BMW dealership partner.

Can you assemble the wheel for me?

Yes. Order the full-conversion parts and we can assemble the wheel before shipping. Contact us with your VIN if you’re unsure which parts your car needs.
