Introduction to the Flat-Bottom Steering Wheel Retrofit

The new, LCI flat bottom steering wheels were first introduced in the new BMW G82 M4 LCI models. BMW – yet again – raised some eyebrows, some hated the new flat bottom – cough AUDI – some loved them from day one. Either way, BMW did a great job, and luckily they were kind enough to re-use some old parts from previous models, so a retrofit is feasible for us. Yay!

Two Upgrade Paths: Essentials vs. Full Conversion

Depending on your situation or needs there are two ways this upgrade can be done. One is the “go all in” and purchase everything new and get it assembled by us. You would then receive a complete steering wheel which you could just simply install in your vehicle, install the airbag in, and enjoy the new look.

The other way is the “essentials” only. This means you would only get the parts that are crucial for this upgrade, like the new carbon fibre or plastic trims.

1. List of Parts: Essentials for a “DIY” Upgrade

Below you’ll find the parts you need to convert your current wheel to the new flat bottom steering wheel:

  1. Steering wheels – select yours
  2. Steering wheel wiring harness – select yours
    1. Only for M owners
  3. Steerning wheel trims
    1. Carbon fiber (2 options)
    2. Silver plastic (2 options)
  4. Black, plastic top cover (the cover between the M1 and M2 buttons)
  5. Vibrationsaktor motor
  6. Vibrationsaktor motor cover

Once you have all these parts you can transfer over the rest of the missing pieces from your current wheel.

2. List of Parts: Full Steering Wheel Conversion

Below you’ll find the parts you need to get a brand new steering wheel that you can assemble yourself or get it assembled by us. This new wheel can be installed into your wheel and used right away. List of parts needed:

  1. Steering wheels – select yours
  2. Steering wheel wiring harness – select yours
    1. Only for M owners
  3. Steerning wheel trims
    1. Carbon fiber (2 options)
    2. Silver plastic (2 options)
  4. Black, plastic top cover (the cover between the M1 and M2 buttons)
  5. Vibrationsaktor motor
  6. Vibrationsaktor motor cover
  7. Horn plate
  8. Steering wheel buttons – different ones available based on your vehicle
    1. Basic
    2. One that supports cruise control
    3. One that supports also driving assistant professional (DAP)
  9. M1 and M2 buttons
  10. Set of new screws
