The introduction of the new flat bottom steering wheel resulted in many emails and comments from our customers when BMW introduced them in the new G82 M4 LCI model. Since most of the questions were similar, we decided to prepare an easy to follow guide, that shows which versions are available.

What options do I have?
BMW was kind enough to create (almost) all variations possible because not only do these new flat bottom steering wheels available in two different materials: leather and alcantara but they support both steering wheel heating and driving assistant professional features. These were not available before if you opted for a M Performance steering wheel or the M4 CSL alcantara wheel. So good news for everyone, because from now on you could enjoy a beautiful alcantara steering wheel while keeping the heating option or DAP.

In what vehicles can these steering wheels be installed in?
It seems like BMW has done the update nicely, so one could update their current steering wheels to these new flat bottom ones. As far as we know the following models support these new wheels:
- 2 series G42
- 2 series G87 M2
- 3 series G20, G21, G80 M3 and G81 M3 Touring
- 4 series G22, G23, G26, G26 i4, G82 M4 and G83 M4
- Z series G29 Z4
- (might be able to fit them into F40 and F44 models)
What parts of the steering wheel needed for the retrofit in older models?
It is not entirely a plug and play install – like in the case of an M Performance wheel – here you would need additional parts to make the install complete. Some of the parts you can reuse from your original wheel, but some parts need to be purchased additionally, please see them below:
There is no physical button available anymore on the new LCI steering wheels for the steering wheel heating feature. The heating is toggled on/off via voice command or through the display. On pre-LCI models, this feature needs to be coded/enabled in the vehicle.
What parts can I keep?
You could keep the following parts from your old steering wheel:
- Airbag
- Steering wheel buttons
- Horn plate
- M1/M2 buttons
- lastly Paddle Shifters (or paddle shifter covers for the manual models)
